Overwhelm. Anxiety. Stress. Worry. Fear. Trauma. These terms are more than familiar to many of us—they’re our inescapable experience.
We don’t want to live this way, but finding a way to break free of these emotions when trials befall us is easier said than done. This perspective of struggle can become the lens over our experience, obscuring hope from our experience. When we don’t see any way things can get better, Scripture reminds us that God not only has something better for us, but He’s all powerful to bring us through, even— especially—in the most impossible circumstances. Let’s be reminded together today who God is to us when we are going through heavy trials.
“
For our innumerous letdowns, God has innumerous solutions.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.“ PSALM 46:1 (ESV)
Have you ever been met with endless ringing on the other end of the phone when you most need someone to answer? In times of desperation and great need, sometimes we can’t find the help we need when we need it. The amazing thing about God is that you don’t even have to look for Him; in your darkest moments, He’s already there, ready to help in ways only He can.
“For every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.“ PSALM 50:10 (NIV)
God owns everything; He has every resource at His disposal. Here on earth, we’re so limited—if only we could say we had every resource at our disposal. Many of us can only dream of that luxury. But with God, we don’t have to wish we had the money that would solve our problem. God can bring solutions about in ways we can’t even imagine.
“I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?“ JEREMIAH 32:27 (NIV)
With all that comes at us in this life, it’s so easy to despair. The challenges we face are mountains exponentionally larger than Mount Everest, looming over us with seeming impossibility. But for our innumerous letdowns, God has innumerous solutions. “Our heavenly Father has a thousand ways to provide for us, of which we know nothing. Those who accept the one principle of making the service and honor of God supreme will find perplexities vanish, and a plain path before their feet.” -The Desire of Ages, p. 330.
He doesn’t get overwhelmed by the things that overwhelm us. “Nothing is too great for Him to bear, for He holds up worlds, He rules over all the affairs of the universe. Nothing that in any way concerns our peace is too small for Him to notice. There is no chapter in our experience too dark for Him to read; there is no perplexity too difficult for Him to unravel. No calamity can befall the least of His children, no anxiety harass the soul, no joy cheer, no sincere prayer escape the lips, of which our heavenly Father is unobservant, or in which He takes no immediate interest.” -Steps to Christ, p. 100.
Don’t be afraid to go to Him. Even if your situation seems hopeless. Especially when you feel most alone. Remember the woman with the issue of blood? She had tried everything— spent her life savings on many physicians in hopes of being cured, but no one could do anything for her. Imagine how hopeless and discouraged she felt after 12 years of that. Maybe you feel like no one can do anything for you in your situation. But be assured your prayers aren’t going unheard: “I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!“ (Isaiah 65:24, NLT).
In your darkest moment, when God feels the farthest, there’s still reason to hope. “To all who are reaching out to feel the guiding hand of God, the moment of greatest discouragement is the time when divine help is nearest.” -The Desire of Ages, p. 528.
In times of trouble, anxiety, and fear in our lives, let us remember that our hope is founded in One who is there in our times of greatest need, has infinite resources, and finds nothing too hard (Hebrews 10:23, ESV).”
